An abbreviation is a short version of a word.

Months of the year with longer names are often abbreviated. The abbreviation consists of the first three or four letters of the word, followed by a period. Abbreviations for months are always capitalized. Months with four or fewer letters (May, June, and July) are not abbreviated.
