Goat's Plants

Goat digs holes to plant seeds. "I hope these grow," he says. Each day, Goat checks the plants. They grow slow and small.

But one plant grows and grows! Goat spots it from his window. "Whoa! That plant is taller than my home!" he says.

It grows taller than the oak tree by the road!

A crow flies low. "Goat, that plant is big. Did you grow it on your own?" he asks.

Goat nods. "Yes, just one seed."

Crow flaps his wings. "Now I know who grows the best plants—Goat!"

What is special about one of Goat's plants?

Toad's Sore Throat

Toad taps his throat. "Oh no! I can't croak!" He looks at the clock. "The big show is close. I need my croak to tell my jokes!"

Toad hops up the road to Mole's home.

"Mole! Help!" he calls. "I can't croak! No joke!"

Mole nods and runs to the stove. He puts hot oats into a bowl.

"Blow, then eat," Mole says. "Now try to croak."

Toad lets out a low, slow croak.

Mole grins. "You're set. Go win that show!"

What will Toad do at the show?

He will sing a song.

He will tell a joke.

He will dance with Mole.

Sometimes two vowels work together as a vowel team. The first vowel in a vowel team says its name. It makes a long vowel sound. The second vowel is silent.

The vowel team oa makes the long o sound /ō/.
