Grapes

Pete and Kate ride bikes all day. They ride past the vines and look for grapes.

"Look! Grapes!" says Pete.

"Can we pick them?" asks Kate.

"Not yet!" says Pete. "They are not ripe yet! When they are green, it will be time."

Some time goes by, and the grapes are green. Pete and Kate pick nine grapes each. They take a bite.

"They are sweet!" says Kate. "I want to eat them all," jokes Kate.

Why can't Pete and Kate pick the grapes at first?

The Kite

Eve got a huge new kite. It is in the shape of a whale. Eve takes the kite out. The wind makes it fly.

Then it dips and falls down.

The kite will not fly. It has a big hole in it.

"My kite broke!" says Eve. Eve takes the kite to her mom. "Can we fix it?"

Mom gets some white tape. "Let's use this," Mom says. She sticks the tape on.

"Now let's try to fly it," Eve says. Eve runs and the kite rises back up!

Why won't the kite fly at first?

Some words end with a silent e. The silent e does not make a sound. Instead, the silent e can make the vowel before it have a long vowel sound. A long vowel sound means the vowel says its name.
