Authors don't always tell you everything. Sometimes, you need to make a guess about something in a story. Use what the story tells you and what you already know about life to make a good guess.

It can help to think about these questions:

What is the character doing or saying?
Why might the character be acting that way?
What do I know about life that can help me figure this out?

Let's look at an example:

Ben ran as fast as he could. He ran past Luke and Archer. "I won!" Ben shouted.

The author doesn't say what Ben is doing, but you can probably figure it out.

The character in this story is running. He runs past two people. Then he says, "I won!"

You probably know from real life that people usually do these things when they are running a race.

So, you can make a good guess that Ben is running a race.
